Field Note #001 - Presence

The moment you realize you’ve been living slightly outside your own body.

Do you ever feel like you’re moving through life on autopilot?

You get through the day, but later you can’t really remember what you did.
Like when you’re driving somewhere familiar and suddenly realize you haven’t been paying attention at all...

...and hope you didn’t run any red lights.

Living life but not actually being there for it.

Turns out, this is something our brains do to conserve energy — it's called automaticity.
Familiar routines + repeated paths = less conscious effort.

Efficient? Sure.
But over time, it can feel like your life is happening around you instead of with you.

When this goes on long enough, it can be hard to notice what’s actually happening in your body and mind in the moment,
versus what you’ve learned to move through without questioning.

Days blur together.
Decisions get made out of momentum.
You keep moving because stopping would require paying attention.

And attention takes energy.

Being present doesn’t have to be a whole spiritual practice or quiet meditation.
It can start with slowing yourself down, taking a few deep breaths, and just noticing.

Nothing is as important as your attention.
Bring it back to yourself.
